One of the most daunting aspects of gardening is choosing, from the huge range now offered, plants that will be suitable for your particular garden. Too often plants are bought and planted in haste, only for them to fail or to create unexpected problems later.
Nelson gardening guru John Penny has a degree in botany and was a teacher and a landscaper. For the last twenty-five years he has worked in the garden industry, firstly at Trents, then Waimea Nurseries, and for the last eleven years at Thirkettle Nurseries. In all these businesses John has had a major role in deciding what was grown and ensuring that the plants offered for sale were the best performers available for temperate gardens. He has a vast knowledge of plants and a down-to-earth approach to gardening.
John will take you briefly through the process of getting started on making a garden, before choosing the very best varieties of plants available and deciding how to put them all together. And, as garden making is an evolving process, John will inspire those with already established gardens to make subtle or more wholesale changes so they can better enjoy their gardens. All major plant groupings will be covered, with an emphasis on evergreen shrubs and edible plants. He will also discuss the so-called amenity plants, and why these are used by many landscapers and councils.
An extensive handout listing recommended plant selections will be provided.
