In her second workshop, Lynda Hallinan launches her brand-new book, Damson: From hedgerow to harvest, and shares her passion for this small purple plum that’s packed with flavour. From the hedgerows of England to our hearts, damsons have been grown in New Zealand since the late 1800s and these versatile plums for preserving are now making a cult comeback in Kiwi orchards. Damson trees and autographed books will be available to purchase, and we’ll finish up with a delectable damson gin, jam, jelly, paste, chutney and tiny trifle tasting.
We are thrilled to welcome Lynda back to Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough this year.
Lynda, along with husband Jason, her boys Lucas and Lachie and a a mongrelesque menagerie of pets and stock, live a largely self-sufficient life on a large smallholding in a rural village in the outermost fringes of Auckland. Since moving there Lynda has planted nearly 300 fruit trees, pushed the fences out into the paddock a few times to make room for more cut flowers, converted the farm’s unused equestrian arena into a huge formal potager with forty beds and put in an almond orchard (not particularly successful). “I love gardening, and I’m blessed to have made this wonderful, life-giving, fulfilling hobby (translation: obsession) my career.”
Lynda is editor-at-large of NZ Gardener magazine, a weekly columnist for the Sunday Star-Times, a gardening broadcaster (listen in to Newstalk ZB’s Saturdays with Jack Tame for their weekly chat at about 10.40am), TV presenter (Get Growing on Choice TV), speaker and workshop host.
