Steve Newall is an amateur botanist whose interest in plants started when he lived for ten years in the middle of Fiordland National Park, working on the avalanche-prone road to Milford Sound and spending his time off wandering around the park, getting to know the plants of the area and their habitats.
He then began collecting seeds, supplying individuals in the UK and Europe with fresh seed when their native New Zealand plants were decimated by polar blasts. When he was approached by Jelitto Staudensamen in Germany to supply their wholesale seed business, he made the leap to turn his seed-collecting hobby into a commercial enterprise.
Steve collects seed from the wild, growing flower crops for seed production on his property near Balclutha, with species including primula, meconopsis and lilium.
Steve is a very relaxed and extremely entertaining speaker, who has presented to conferences, garden clubs and plantspeople in New Zealand and around the world, including on five speaking tours to the northern hemisphere. He has a wealth of fascinating stories to tell about his work and travels in the world of plants and seeds, and will be giving his talk at two sessions this year at Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough. Be sure to catch him!
